Something that bugs me about films at the moment is everything seems to have to have a sequel. Pirates of the Caribbean would have been just fine as a one off film, but 3 sequels followed it, each getting progressively worse.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, it is an early '80s cult classic film based on the exploits of a lawman who hunts rogue androids. It brought Ruger Hauer to our screens along with Harrison Ford and Daryl Hannah. For the time the special effects were brilliant, the story was one you could really get into and the climax to the film was unexpected.
But a sequel? Why? The film ended, well I won't tell you the end in case you haven't seen it, but lets just say it didn't lead to a sequel. 30 years on, they haven't found a writer, they have no idea what the story will be and they have no cast lined up, but they announce there will be a sequel.
Not all films need or deserve a sequel. What next? A sequel to 300? 301 - The Revenge of the Persians?
Anyone else think this is weird? Or do you have another film that had a sequel you thought wasn't needed, or one that did need a sequel but it was never made?
I am just looking forward to the next movie of "Hot to train your dragon", as well as the series. Mainly because of the snippet Christmas story they made, that at least gives off the feeling that they take the story seriously and will keep it in the same genre as they started it in: Darker and grittier and not as childish as some of their other animation movies. Which might give me a bit of respect and faith back for them after they started milking the Shrek franchise (and obviously the "let's make a thousand sequels based on a story with a huge lack of plot already".
I'm really disappointed The Golden Compass and Eragon won't have movie sequels, because the although the movies were pretty average the books were amazing.
yes, they should make sequels for these movies.
Two more things that should never have been continued, for very, very different reasons: Twilight and Pokemon.
twilight is ok, but pokemon is overrated. i liked the old series but now they run out of ideas. and to understand the movies you should see the series or play the games...i have better things to do.
Many times, I think that many movies don't need a sequel. Some do, like Star Wars. That was a saga. But many movies don't. I thought that Pirates of the Caribbean was fine with one movie. Same with The Matrix. I haven't seen the sequels yet, but I thought that it ended fine. I heard that Jaws progressively worsened as it went through it's 4 movies. Many times sequels have no real plot. They are just a spoof off of the original it seems. Now, it seems that there are few movies that come off of the production line that have no plot and is just special effects. Some of the few people that I know of now who make good movies are Steven Speilberg and Peter Jackson and George Lucas. I haven't seen much from anybody else.
It kind of makes Chinese culture seem so absurd with a fantastic array of martial arts moves. Correction, it does portray authentic cultural characteristics, but it kind of makes me cringe to watch Jack Black portray the blundering panda which I dislike. And the deus ex machina is horrible in both films.
I just finished heritage and I just wish they had made eragon a bit more acurate to the book beceause in my opinion they kinda screwed up with the film , i mean it was an entertaining movie but it differs a lot on many points from the book.
As long as they stayed with the story, I think I would have enjoyed those. Were they supposed to be made with the originals or the modern three?
as far as i can remember they wanted to make nine movies from nine books. i dont know which books they want to film but i hope they stay with the story. i heard that more than nine different star wars books exist.
they planned to make nine movies but then they made only six. i want to see the sequels, too.
its all about money. they make a sequel if the movie was great or to get more money.
The reason the last 3 Star Wars movies were not made was because the Star Wars universe had been so big books had already been made stating what happened after Return of the Jedi. Because of this the last 3 movies were not made.

Return of the Jedi was my favourite Star Wars and I would have gladly, more than gladly watched a sequel.
The prequels as they are called, I don't hold in any regard at all, nor the digitally remastered Star Wars. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were great films of their time and even now, they're fantastic. They were messed with for profit and from an artistic point of view, that is a crime against those 3 great films.
I hate digital manipulation. Imagine if someone decided to screw with Sergio Leone films to make The Man With No Name get fired on first and digitally move him out of the way of the bullets.
