Have you ever noticed that every single U.S. president is Christian?
Now we have a black president, sure that's a start. But we need to diversify! When people are not exposed to different people things like the KKK happen. I think we should have backrounds in office.

Not really in general. However, there are more extremists there than other places.

In our media, anywhere south but Florida is viewed as extremist.Perhaps I need to view more international media outlets.

The same for us usually. It's a stereotype. In actuality though, it's not much different than anywhere else. Any large community will have extremists of all ends, it just depends on how vocal they are.

It'd be interesting to know what the stereotype for the English is, but I guess that is for another thread?

Only thing that comes off the top of my head is that you have bad food.

Back on topic?

Once again, it really shouldn't matter, as long as they keep it from having to much of an influence.

Started a thread about racial stereotypes, should help dispel a few myths, but like you say, back to topic.

Who really chooses the American President though? At the moment there are people lining up to become President, on one side Obama, on the other a group of people who seem to be arguing amongst themselves. Did anyone pick those people to argue amongst themselves?

The media picks who becomes President and who doesn't.

That long list of Presidents and you're going to pick me up on one spelling mistake? Seriously? How many of those Presidents could you have named? Bearing in mind I live in England and my knowledge of the US has been schooled through McDonalds, KFC and the sightings of G.W. Bush.

Sorry, it's understandable that you made a mistake.
And I could name every single one, since I had to memorize all of the the United States presidents in order, including their first names. Then again, I'm American. The only British prime ministers I know are Tony Blair, David Cameron, and William Gladstone.

I was simply trying to highlight the fact that in an age where we must show no discrimination against any race, colour or creed, that the simple fact that the Amish choose to live without the aid of technology, that this in itself would lead to a natural prejudice.

So if I believed in God, and decided that due to my religion I would take a vow of silence and never speak to anyone, would it be prejudice if you decided not to elect me based on that, if I ran for president?

And why does the browser I'm using refuse to accept the English language? It will tell me that recognise is a spelling mistake and insist on replacing it with recognize, which is an American spelling.

Because Americans rox ur sox?
Oh ****, now it's replacing it with your average American's spelling. Haha.

Plus...Benjamin Disraeli, Margaret Thatcher Neville Chamberlain, and Winston Churchill. That brings my knowledge of British leaders to 7 out of...what, 75?

We shouldn't elect people merely on how different they are from one another. We shouldn't have elected Obama because he was black, only because of his views.

We shouldn't elect an atheist just because we want someone different, we should elect someone based on if we think they'll make a good leader or not.

We shouldn't force diversity, that's just racist or discrimination of a different sort.

I have no idea what the first names of the Presidents are, but entering into the world of British Prime Ministers... ready?

Walpole, Wilmington, Pelham, Holles, Cavendish, Stuart, Grenville, Watson-Wentworth, Pitt the Elder, Fitzroy, North, Watson-Wentworth (again), Petty-Fitzmaurice, Bentinck, Pitt the Younger, Addington, Pitt the Younger (again), Grenville (and yes, a relation), Bentinck (again), Perceval, Jenkinson, Canning, Robinson, Wellesley, Grey, Lamb, Wellesley (again), Peel, Melbourne, Peel (again), Russell, Stanley, Hamilton-Gordon, Temple, Stanley (again), Temple (again, Russell (again), Stanley (again), Disraeli, Gladstone, Disraeli (again), Gladstone (again), Gascoyne-Cecil, Gladstone (again), Gascoyne-Cecil (again), Gladstone (again), Primrose, Gascoyne-Cecil (again), Balfour, Campbell-Bannerman, Asquith, George, Law, Baldwin, MacDonald, Baldwin (again), MacDonald (again), Baldwin (again), Chamberlain, Churchill, Attlee, Churchill (again), Eden, MacMillan, Douglas-Home, Wilson, Heath, Wilson (again), Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown and Cameron.

I can give you a run down of the recent leaders, from Callaghan onwards, but I think that may be a bit much.

Hey, I was only using that to show that we can't be expected to know all that much about the past leaders of other countries.

Walpole, Wilmington, Pelham, Holles, Cavendish, Stuart, Grenville, Watson-Wentworth, Pitt the Elder, Fitzroy, North, Watson-Wentworth (again), Petty-Fitzmaurice, Bentinck, Pitt the Younger, Addington, Pitt the Younger (again), Grenville (and yes, a relation), Bentinck (again), Perceval, Jenkinson, Canning, Robinson, Wellesley, Grey, Lamb, Wellesley (again), Peel, Melbourne, Peel (again), Russell, Stanley, Hamilton-Gordon, Temple, Stanley (again), Temple (again, Russell (again), Stanley (again), Disraeli, Gladstone, Disraeli (again), Gladstone (again), Gascoyne-Cecil, Gladstone (again), Gascoyne-Cecil (again), Gladstone (again), Primrose, Gascoyne-Cecil (again), Balfour, Campbell-Bannerman, Asquith, George, Law, Baldwin, MacDonald, Baldwin (again), MacDonald (again), Baldwin (again), Chamberlain, Churchill, Attlee, Churchill (again), Eden, MacMillan, Douglas-Home, Wilson, Heath, Wilson (again), Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown and Cameron.

*sigh* I am currently resisting the urge to see you that memorization with a list of the United States presidents, including first names and sometimes middle names, then raise you O Captain! My Captain!, Sonnet 18, and The Road Not Taken. Resisting, since it would derail the thread.

How about you reply to the small portion of my post actually relevant to the thread? xP

John F. Kennedy was technically a Roman Catholic, not a Christian(nitpicking, I know). And a bunch of the early presidents were Quakers and Deists.

I'm a bit late on this but Catholics and protestants are both Christians FYI.

That's a bit of an extreme example you know. In this case, people wouldn't vote for you because you would be unable to communicate with anyone. It wouldn't really have anything to do with your religion, other than that it is the root cause of it.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to show off or anything like that. Just sharing knowledge, but I realise that makes me look a complete nerd.

Possibly. If you ran for election and people didn't vote for you on the basis of a vow of silence though, wouldn't it be also acceptable that they didn't vote for you because you didn't voice any policies?

It's a bit of a tough one that, do you want to rethink it and come back with another example that isn't so restrictive? (I don't mean that to sound insulting in any way by the way, just that you've picked a really bad example and you can probably come up with another that isn't as easily answered)... I'm not doing well with diplomacy tonight am I? Is there really any way of being polite and diplomatic when you want to be on the world wide web?
