I know this could be a touchy subject, but I mean this thread to be more about learning about each other than anything else.
I'm English and I'm genuinely interested to learn of the racial stereotypes about the people I live and work around.
Please note, whilst I'm welcoming posts about racial stereotypes, I don't mean racial insults. For instance, a racial stereotype where I am is that those in the south of the USA tend to be less tolerant than those in the north. It isn't insulting, it is almost asking a question.
Fully appreciate that the mods may view this thread as a step too far.
It doesn't have an official name, but it definitely exists.
I'm genuinely struggling to think of another race or religion that has a phobia named after it, there is bound to be an obscure one, but I mean something in popular use (and I don't mean popular as in cheered on, I mean it as in used a lot)
Yes, it's popular in the media, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's popular in real life. Have you ever met someone genuinely Islamophobic?
I didn't know some of the stereotypes, but once they'd been written, I realised I'd seen them in some form in the media.
Well, since we're on the subject of religion, let's move on to some of the touchier ones, about religion... Catholic priests: Are rapists of little boys. Catholics: Are intolerant and closeminded. Muslims: Are Islamic terrorists. The women always wear full burqas and all. Jews: Have large noses and larger bank accounts. Mormons: Are so nice and polite it's offputting. Atheists: Are immoral hedonists. That's all I can think of for now.
I'm not sure I have in the strictest sense. I've met some true racists who dislike people for the colour of their skin and I've met people who despise the terrorists who have committed atrocities, but not someone who has specifically stated that it is because of the religion someone follows they must be A, B or C.
Saying that, there is ignorance of the Muslim faith, but we can say that about all faiths. Ask 1000 people and they'll likely know more about the Muslim religion than the Hindu, or more about Catholicism than Buddhism.

Exactly, the stereotypes will more than likely provoke an emotion in those that follow that particular religion, but that is the nature of stereotypes. People will take offense because they know them not to be true.

I disagree. It depends entirely on where those 1,000 people are from. A Saudi Arabian, for example, would be certain to know more about Islam than an Italian, who would know more about Catholicism than a Korean, who would know more about Buddhism, and so on.

So then it is inaccurate to say that Islamophobia is "unique" and widespread just because it has its own name. It has its own name because of the media, not because of any actual social effect.

Or perhaps the religious stereotypes are simply more offensive. "Your priests **** little boys" is an awful lot more offensive than "eople from your country are really good at math", for example.

When you put it like that, I can't disagree.

Excellent point.

Again, true, but then priests aren't the religion as such, they are there to service the religion. It's a bit like people saying McDonalds are kiddie fiddlers because one of the staff there was caught doing things he shouldn't. I guess there is a different perspective if you happen to be a priest, but then if the Catholic church had been open and honest about the whole affair in the first place, a few priests would have been singled out quickly rather than tarnishing the majority.
There's actually a documentary on Canada Called Canadian Bacon. It talks heavily about Canadian behavior and way of life in Canada. It's actually a very good documentary.
One that annoys me to know extent is that a lot of the people I live around in the Western Suburbs of Sydney seem to believe all Aboriginals can amount to are bogan paint sniffers. Don't get me wrong some are having a joke, and I have a laugh myself now and again, but what annoys me is that it's the ACTUAL bogans that say it. Fuark
like most things in life the statement is made on small scale of people we meet, fortunately(or unfortunately) we have met the smart ones in the country because it is most likely they're parents are rich and smart and could afford to live in the country hence the children are strongly advised to be academic scholar not scums. There are plenty that aren't smart but as human nature we don't go near people or things that would be detrimental for us in any form.
Well I hear a lot of racial stereotypes, here are a few;
We Brits wear tights, speak with a posh accent, drink tea and eat crumpets excessively. All Jews are cheap. People from Liverpool are thieves. Scottish people wear kilts, play bagpipes all day. Welsh people have sex with sheep. Anybody from places such as India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. are all labelled terrorists, and eat nothing but curry. All Irish people are Gypsies, live in caravans and travel around.
I agree with none, these are just ones I've heard.
In fairness though that is a stereotype that has been banded about since Liverpool was developed as a major shipping port and became a haven for crime in the process. Where there is wealth, there will be theft.
Anybody from places such as India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. are all labelled terrorists, and eat nothing but curry.
That is a new one on me. There are some in the UK that would deem someone a terrorist by their appearance, but I'd suggest they are in a very small minority.
Welsh people have sex with sheep.
Thankfully the Welsh have an incredibly good sense of humour as demonstrated by a Welsh friend of mine who explained that they once tied a sheep to a lamp post in the town centre, then rang the local newspaper to do a story on the town's new leisure centre!
We Brits wear tights, speak with a posh accent, drink tea and eat crumpets excessively.
I wear jeans, speak like Sean Bean, drink coffee and eat crumpets excessively But again, I love the stereotypes of the English, especially the bad teeth and the bowler hat versions... it's a good laugh.
We all will do anything to save a dime (not necessarily true) All Jewish mothers are people who can't be satisfied and always rage on their daughter-in-law All Jewish mothers subscribe to the Asian grading scale (<A is an F) All Jewish mothers serve food with a fresh side of guilt (Food didn't exist when I was a child) Jews have sex through a sheet (absolutely not true) All Jews wear funny hats and have long sideburns All Jews are either doctors and lawyers Finally, all Jewish daughters are princesses who don't do any work...AT ALL
All Irish people drink, wear kilts, have red hear and beards. Iraqis are terrorists. Dutch people are currant. Italians can't drive and only eat pizza and pasta. All Somalians are pirates. Every Cuban deals drugs. All Australians have boomerangs and live in kangaroo's. Japanese people only care for honor.
Im half Asian and half German... I can say that Germans can hold there alcohol very well I have seen it happen. Well I also partially failed the first trimester of math so that should dispel something. I have also heard that Indian people (not native american) are good with tricking people.
