Back when the first Sonny hit the internet I was hooked;
I didn't develop games back then, but it's one of those games
that sparked my interest for the profession.
Now, it's time for me to create a tribute.

Sonny: Genesis is the next big project I've set for myself.
It'll cover much unexplored territory for me,
and is a perfect opportunity to grow as a developer.

Sonny: Genesis
The game takes place in the same universe as the original
flash games, but will feature a brand new cast of characters.
This doesn't necessarily mean you won't see familiar faces

The gameplay will be very similar to the flash games, with the
addition of some new battle mechanics. This means it'll be
characterised by turn-based combat, and broken up by 'roaming'
sections where you'll be able to outfit your characters and
purchase new gear.

Sonny: Genesis is being developed as a standalone
game for the PC platform; this means it won't run inside
a browser like the originals. Porting the game to HTML
or mobile is not something I currently plan to do.

Planned Features
- 3 (Playable) classes with unique skill trees and playstyles:
The Combatant, Illusionist and Sentinel.
- 5 Story Zones + Post-Game Content
- Side quests
- Fully voice-acted
- Illustrated story cutscenes
- Online leaderboards and achievements

I love involving fellow fans of the series in the creative process.
That's why I encourage anyone to post their ideas and suggestions;
several have already made it into the game!

I'll also be holding multiple creative contests throughout development;
winners of these contests will see their name and contributions added
to the final version of the game!

I need Playtesters!
As a playtester you'll recieve unfinished builds of the game
in various stages of development, with the task of helping me
find bugs & glitches and providing feedback.
I'll try to strip these builds down to include as few story elements
as possible, in an effort to minimize spoiling the finished version.
I can't promise that they will all be spoiler-free though.

At first it'll mostly be about trying to find the most enjoyable
game loop and working out any bugs and quirks on different machines.
Then we'll move on to balancing the different classes and abilities.
I fully realise everyone's got a life, so there are no deadlines
and you can always take your time.

I need an Artist!
As you've probably seen, my art is mediocre at best.
That's why I'm looking for a skilled artist that's willing to help
me bring this project to life, and speed up the development!

Again, there will be no set-in-stone deadlines; as this is a fan
project and everyone's doing it on their own time. You'll of course
be credited for your work, both in-game and on the forums.

Keep in mind that the story will be spoiled for you;
because you'll mostly be working on the art for the cutscenes
in-between zones!

Will it be free?
Of course the game will be 100% free.
Besides obvious legal reasons, I always intended to create
a tribute to the games for the community; and I feel the
best way to do this is to not charge anything.
Once the game is released, I may consider adding
the option for people to be able to donate something;
this won't give you any in-game rewards or benefits,
but it allows people to support me if they want to.

What are the system requirements?
I'm always trying to optimise the game where I can,
in order for it to run smoothly on a wide variety of machines.
Final system requirements are TBD and depend on the feedback
from the playtesters.

Will players be able to duel online?
Network programming is something I sadly have very little
experience with.The closest thing to an 'Online Mode' I could
implement would be something similar to the PvP-mode
from Sonny 2; which I'm currently not focussing on.
I am planning to add online leaderboards and achievements
to the game.

What is the release date?
There's currently no release date.

Hello ! I heard that you working in new Sonny and I want to help
I remember that game from my childhood and I so sad that new Sonny in IOS soo bad
Maybe you can creat game that be really worthy for all players ! Not cheap remake in IOS and Steam
I mean the real legendary SONNY !
I belive in you art and your sketches really excited my !

@MaxPi Thanks for the kind words!
I'm hard at work coding all the systems atm;
once that's done, I'm going to revamp this thread with all the new stuff.

Sadly I only have every other Saturday to really work on the game;
but It's coming along nicely, if I do say so myself.

Since we are going to create a new Sonny
As a fan, I must share my ideas, which will bring a bit of variety to the game!
1. Black market
In the entire Sonny series there are shops, why we do not add a new way to buy cool equipment in a black market, there is only one window with a question mark and the price, clicking on it, and paying the player gets a random item that may not be in the shop but is will be from this zone.
2. Broken equipment
With the victory Sonny can get broken equipment it can not be dressed but can be repaired with money or sold, also broken equipment can be obtained from a black shop, it's a random.
3.Training club
Now for a maney you can learn new skills and improve them in the training club, skills will be displayed in the skill pool but they can not be improved for the skill point only for money.
Now in Sonny in a battle between diologists, you can choose what Sonny will answer, it's not affect in battle but with this player will feel more free.

@MaxPi New Ideas are always welcome and I encourage anyone to share them!

1. Very intriguing! Not hard to implement,
and adds an interesting risk/reward element.
I'd like to know how more people feel about this one.
2. I've been playing with the idea of upgradable equipment,
but ultimately dropped it because I decided I want the player
to be constantly swapping gear and finding new interesting items.
Broken equipment however does sound very interesting;
Are we also talking about equipment that degrades after each fight?
3. I don't think it's a good idea to add skills that you can only
upgrade with money; because I think it would take away from choosing
and upgrading the right skills with limited points to spend.
Maybe I'm wrong though.
4. Funny that you bring this up, cause I had something like this planned;
moments where you could actually influence the story by choosing
differently. I'm not going forward with it though, since it would take
a significant amount of extra work. I'd have to create multiple paths
with different fights to really make the choises mean something, and I
already have a story i want to tell in mind. P.S You won't be playing as
Sonny! The game will feature a brand new cast of characters, in the same
universe as the original flash games.

The OP is very outdated by this point;
I can't wait to show the new stuff!
I'm very busy around the holidays,
so I'm hoping to revamp this thread by the end of January.

I am a old fan of Sonny, I remember when it first came out. I am unsure if others have suggested this idea already: side quests.

example #1: kill 15 ZPCI soldiers in area 1

example #2: kill 5 ZPCI specialists

example #3: kill a ZPCI courier

example #4: kill a powerful ZPCI unit (i.e. the ZPCI paladin boss from Sonny 1)

Whats rewerd will be from side quest ?
Money? Exp? Or maybe some cool weapons ?
Where be this side quests ? Maybe like in original Sonny you must click in something or someone in Roaming Mode and you will see not only text but also a quests ! it's be cind intresting!

I have a idea:
Perhaps there should be extreme quests
These quests can grant extreamly powerful gear or a new ally or etc
However these quests are to be Extremly hard and you will fail on them atleast 5 times
Idk just my idea ;3
Also i wonder What will you use for the music?
Edit 1: The difficulty should be very hard,Harder than the story so people cant just farm them for legendary gear. These should unlock after idk the end of the story or something

Looks like quests are in high demand!
I just don't know how they would work; but we can figure that out together.

I don't think killing a certain type of enemy 'x' times would be a good
(side)quest. because this means either the player has to encounter this
enemy, at least, 'x' times in the story; which would make the player
always complete the quest, making the quest rather pointless;
or the quest is only obtainable through grinding training fights, which I
rather not do because this would effectively cut a large part of content
from the people doing legend runs. (Which will be a thing in the game )

If anyone has suggestions, feel free to post them!

And indeed, the quests do not always have to be set on killing units!
I suggest this option
When a player clicks on an NPC or an trader from the shop on Roaming Mode and get a diolog with this unit.
NPC tale about his sad position in life or sad story and also he will ask player for some rare item,weapon,quest item!(From shop,battle or other zone)
Then quest is complete player go in that dialogue and accept rewerd!
Or you can found a item lying on the floor, click in Roaming Mode and you gat a message you gat a item
