The facts still remain that we owe a million apologies to Southern Cyprus. But now there is more to it then just our apology
True, there were atrocities committed on both sides. The real tradgedy of cyprus is the fact it was the mainland greeks and mainland turks who really hated each other. Until that point the turk and greek communities lived in harmony. Kind of like the arabs and jews getting along famously in the holy land pre ww1.
Right now though, the onus is on the turks to apologise. The greeks were at the time under a tyrannic military junta who wanted to distract greeks from domestic unrest with a foreign war. The turks were just as stubborn. As far as im concerned, the turks had no right to claim the land as their own in the first place (im talking hundreds of years ago), or after the war which is what really pisses me off about it.
...to go back to the OP's first question. I've been to Turkey once, on a girls summer holiday to party when we were 19, so we didn't see a whole lot, but we really liked it. There are many Turkish immigrants here, and they don't always get the best press, but I have always lived in neighbourhoods with many Turkish families, so I went over to their places loads. I have always found the Turkish families to be very friendly and respectful (and the food is amazing!).
Turkey...well, geographically I know that they are in the west of the Middle East, north of Syria. They are a peninsula surrounded by the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. I also know that their capital is Ankara and they also have Istanbul. Historically, I know that Turkey was once the Ottoman Empire. I also know they supported the Axis in both World Wars, and after their defeat in World War 1, they were occupied by the victorious Allied soldiers. I also know that Turkey was the home of the historical Troy(yes, the one with the Trojan Horse). And that's pretty much all I know. I know that there's also some Turkish emperor whose name I should already know, but I just can't remember it! I keep thinking Sargon the Conqueror with that weird beard, but I know he's from Mesopotamia, so that can't be right.
I also know they supported the Axis in both World Wars
Not true. Firstly, the axis only existed during ww2. Secondly they were neutral for the whole of ww2, and only invaded germany in 1945 when it became apparent that they would gain automatic entry into the newly formed un for doing so. They played it well.

I think you know that I meant Germany by the Axis. And what's this? A quote from you on the first page?
Or the fact they supported the Germans in WW1 and 2.

Also; no, they weren't. Russia declared war on Turkey in 1914 for their alliance with Germany, and Turkey entered the war officially in late 1914 on the side of the central powers, helping Germany with their offensive against Russia. That's pretty early in the war, since it started in 1914 and ended in 1918. And yeah...I was wrong with the Axis. I got confused. Sue me.
