Wht do we have religion? Because to me it seems that we only have religion to comfort you or the past. Religion also seems that it is supposed to heal sins. How do we know all of this without some proof? (I'm a christian) Like do we have any bones of adam and eve? I'm just trying to get answers to questions. Thank you!
There is no real answer to why we have religion. In fact, the term "religion" itself is sooo broad that it is nearly meaningless. If there was some definitive proof of religion, then everyone would likely subscribe to that religion. But the fact is - religion, morality, creation stories, sins, pretty much everything you experience intellectually is man made. If believing in god makes you happy, then go for it, but don't expect any kinds of real answers - it is entirely faith-based.
Yes i beleive the reason we have religion is to find your inner man or woman. Because through religion we can find out if we have or have not been " good "
That's a somewhat reasonable conclusion, but we are using some modern ideas of religion to retrospectively assign the qualities to early belief systems. If we have learned anything from history, it's that most of the past is a series of contingencies, not conscious decisions.
Religion is the belief that we are here for a reason. Some people choose to believe that we were created by some entity in space, rather than being some random protozoic goo. If they do it in an understanding and non hateful fashion it's perfectly fine.
yes, but anyone who believes in no religion is completely naive...if it was possible it would be done by now. so, in my eyes, religion is completely legitimate and real just people are often too naive, but that's nothing new...look at history and you'll see
If what was possible? I think it's pretty naive to think there's a magical leprechaun thing watching over us. And what on earth do you mean by look at history and you'll see?
well, read the first line before the ellipsis....and then after, then use your brain...then answer your question. good?
if you still need help. there is a reason only two percent of the world is atheist (and atheism is nothing new) because the spiritual world is reality. and the leprechaun is not magical, he just has a nice outfit (with the least bit of sarcasm possible.................)
It still doesn't make sense. If what is possible? Not believing in god? Obviously that is possible so I really have no idea what you're talking about. Maybe instead of being a jerk, you could explain yourself? Or is it that you just don't know what you're talking about? That's probably much more likely since your argument is totally fallacious anyway. If you really think that a small percentage of the world being atheist is a refutation of atheism, then maybe you should use your brain.
Hey, you rascals. Settle down. Even though I really want to see a fellow atheist and I assume Christian go at eachothers throats, I do not think it should be ensued.
First of all, we are not discussing whether or not the Earth or life on it was made by science or some all-powerful being. The major point of the discussion was why there is religion. Which is one that I would much rather discuss.
Most humans always want something to believe in, but not really for the live they live. It is what happens after the life they live that they need real comfort. All religions tell you some magical and fuzzy way that you are going to live after you die. Assuming you are nice.
three things. devoidless. noted, and why did you report me?
and Moegreche, was i being a jerk? if so...i apologize, i was merely responding in the same fashion as you. it's kinda lame that you smear my post but then ridicule me for doing the same. anyways. the subject is religion and why, and with the underlying question of "is it even legitimate?"
so my reply was accordingly.
religion is legitamate and is more than a "so i can feel good" experience. whether it's Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or what not. they're all completely different, and i'm not saying they are the same. but they are all spiritual. and as for the percentage of atheist, i do believe it is relevant and there is something to be said about consistency, the whole world is looking for truth yet not even 5% believe in nothing, you don't give enough credit to the human mind and it's ability to discern truth
Izapora, a jerk isn't the term I would use to describe your previous posts. Also, you were not responding in the same fashion as Moe.
I don't see how you've manage to concluded that the underlying question is the legitimacy of religion in this topic.
When Moegreche responds he always brings facts along with his opinion and is willing to back up his claims. You on the other hand are tossing your opinions with nothing to back it up except some aggravated posts.
Now, I'm going to add my opinion on the matter, which is very similar to the others in here.
Religion came before science. Religion worked (at a point in time) as an answer to all those unknown things about our reality. Science is replacing those unknowns, now. So, it seems that religion has been reduced to a security blanket for humans and moral values.
well, his response "I think it's pretty naive to think there's a magical leprechaun thing watching over us." is pretty sarcastic, so mine was is well, that is what i was saying.
megarock81, the starter of the topic, writes "How do we know all of this without some proof?" he is questioning and asking for proof of the legitimacy of religion.
as for proof? what do i need to prove?
does this help? https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/xx.html
Using the premise that not many people agree with something makes it wrong is fallacious (at least when there is no evidence to support any hypothesis). Most of the ancient world believed that stone fell because their teleos was to be dragged down towards earth - nothing to do with gravity, only because they were made of earth and wanted to be close to earth. As time goes on, our understanding about the world around us changes dramatically, and assuming that a human mind is the measure of all things is giving us way more credit than we're due. And as far as calling you a jerk, I felt like you did not answer a legitimate question of clarification that I posed - instead you told me to reread your post and to use my brain. I am easily offended and I apologize.
