I beg to differ. Maybe his Morales and what not were screwy, but he was an excellent general. Why do you think he managed to take over most of Europe before the U.S. came along and wiped his sorry @ss off the map.

Because of appeasement. Everyone was afraid enough that they just let him walk in to all the countries and do whatever. If Britain and France had not just sat there, the war may have been prevented. Or it could have come at a greater cost to all sides. Just depends.
Hitler was a horrible general. Although the blitzkrieg worked extremely well, he refused to retreat under any costs. This is what cost him hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the U.S.S.R.
Politically, he was a genius. And very charismatic. Otherwise, he was a moron. Stratigy, and logistics. One of his main problems was he spent so much time lying to himself and others, that he ended up believing it.

Didn't he also refuse to send reinforcements as well?

True, he was smart politically, but not a genius. There are 3 reasons I can name why people followed every word he said.
1. Most Germans felt that they still had a fighting chance and that WWI was just a fluke. They only needed time to recover their numbers.
2. Hitler was not always looked up to by the other Germans as what you see in old documents. He was seen as a poor strategist at first because his first few choices to start the war were actually next to suicidal. He was lucky to win those battles because everyone let him have what he wanted in fear of starting another World War (that fear made the war happen. Ironic isnt it?).
3. Germany was suffering a depression. They were desperate for power and desperate to get back on their feet. They were at a vulnerable state in which the people were open to such madness.

America was trying to stay out of the war. Remember? America entered because Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The reason we fought Germany was because they were allies with Japan. So really the reason Hitler took control of what he did was because he had a good start. Nobody wanted to fight another war so they let him have his power as previously mentioned.
Hitler was a terrible strategist, and he was a good leader at best considering the people whom he controlled were still angry about WW2, in a depression, and Hitler got really lucky and appeared to be a brilliant man.
Ehh, they really didn't. They just killed 200,000 Japenese and forced another 200,000 in prison camps.
Everyone in the war from the beggening was exhausted and when we went in to help them we really helped them out A LOT. To say we did next to nothing is a great deal off from the truth.
This is what cost him hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the U.S.S.R.
Sorry. But the Germans weren't part of the U.S.S.R. That was Russia.
Sorry to say this, and as much as I would love to stay profesional as a mod, I must say that you were wrong wrong wrong.
Lol. I'm not wrong, Hitler wasn't a horrible leader. His ideals were horrible. Not his leadership skills! How the heck do you think we went from a peon Private in WW1, to a Commanding Officer and one of the instigators of WWII? BY HIS LEADERSHIP.
Also, The U.S. did a lot to say the least. If it wasn't for us, many more people would have died in those concentration camps.

Yea the US did nothing else. That was it. My great grandfather was in a regiment that liberated one of the camps over there which is actually how he met my great grandmother, who he saved from the camp. But you know, they did nothing else but nuke Japan, right.
He took advantage of the circumstances before him. He did it well. He took over a country, and most of Europe. He tried for the world, but failed.
His main strength was getting people to follow him. Just goes to show the dangers of min-maxing. Sorry.

I guess we will never really know if he was brilliantly manipulative or a lucky buffoon.

I see what you are saying now. Well some great teachers would fail to be school principle. I beleive the same is in his case. A good/decent cammanding officer but not so great a fuhrer.

My grandfather went around the world during WWII. Being in all those places leads me to say that we helped out a hell of a lot more than you give credit. As I said before, we got into the war late but when we got in we were all ready and awake while our allies were tired and exhausted. If not for us, they would have lost many many more people. To say the US did nothing but nuke Japan is just plain wrong and it sickens me to hear that to be honest.

I was actually very being sarcastic. I hope you didn't think I was being serious. >_< Sometimes I forget that sarcasm doesn't really travel very well over the internet. No, my great grandfather was there helping to liberate camps. He actually met his future wife in a camp that he helped liberate. I'm of the mind that the US helped out a lot more then some people like to give credit.
I had family die in those camps as well as help liberate them. WWII is one of the wars I love to study. I love the politics of war. I'm glad to see we're on the same page now NoName.
