Due to the majority of Americans being Christians, meaning a lot of people in the government are Christian, and homosexuality is a sin. I know there is a separation of church and state, but when it comes down to a vote....

Because the government exists to oppress. If they don't oppress, they have no power.

They use "the constitution says that marriage is between a man and a woman" as a cover up for their dislike of gays. At least in most cases.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

where in there do you see anything concerning homosexuality or marriage?

that's the text of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution

They just say it to make life unfair for people.

The only reason it's an issue is because of right winged nut jobs and Jesus freaks.

While people are discussing whether or not gay marriage is right there are people waiting to get on with their fucking lives.

but if the government didn't interfere?

do you think most churches would allow gays to marry?

Part of it may be a trifle...Machiavellian. If the nation keeps having same sex couples, the birth rate might take a less than appreciated dive over time since less people will be able to have children. Also, if you have a group of workers who are all same sex, the government and CEOs might think that work may be effected negatively. So perhaps the government wouldn't want people to get into the whole question as to whether or not they're homosexual and just accept what society demands all to conform to.

But that's not my opinion on gay rights at all, not by far. But that is just a pile of reasons why the government and CEOs might not want homosexuality to spread too much.

Responce to what VoteSocialist said:

I think if the government really thinks that then it's time to find a new one. I realize what you said is just a theory as to what the government might think, but you could know for certain by listening to government officials debate. It is after all up to them.

marriage is a traditional spiritual matter concerning christianity. the gays want the label of marriage because it is a house-hold name and are willing to go to court to have it. i'm for gay partnership but not marriage.
