Metallica, they're my fave band ever. But there's also King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, who had a great influence on Metallica.

The level of ignorance in this thread about heavy metal is astounding and offensive. Nu metal is a misnomer, Slipknot and Disturbed are not metal in the least. Hatebreed is NOT death metal in the SLIGHTEST. Rammstein isn't much of a metal band either.

With that being said, the best metal band (and my favorite) is doubtlessly Iron Maiden. Like someone already said, they have never sold out and never will.

Great humor, Zega. Not too many people get that kind of humor on this site, though.

My favorite metal band is Ozzy Osbourne.

Opeth is my favorite metal band. Great blending of death metal fury and soft artistic nuance, and they can masterfully display both of them

I also really like bands that aren't metal but have metal elements - bands like King Crimson and at some points Yes have genius applications of metal elements and metallic heaviness in their instrumentation.

Alt, you always list bands I've never heard of. Which is a good thing.

Scar Symmetry, Soilwork and Metallica.
The best metal bands I know.

Between The Buried and Me--If you like prog and you like metal, and you haven't heard of them (somehow) check 'em out. They are brilliant. And they manage to make all their music influenced by only one drug: Caffeine (in the form of cheerwine no less....)

It just has to be Iron Maiden

Metallica was good before the 90's, still like them afterwards but indeed, isn't really metal.

Less popular band I also really love for their unique style is The Sword.

I also enjoy Disturbed and Testament, some of Megadeth and Machine Head as well. Anyone can recommend any bands for me?

I heard Megadeth's endgame is very good indeed, I might check it out.

PossibleInsanity, you're not funny. The name of this thread isn't "Let's be sarcastic" =/

Anyway, a couple of my favorite metal bands are August Burns Red, which is more metalcore/progressive metal, Attack Attack! which is, again, metalcore with some electronica (sexy), and Project 86. I know none of these are true "metal" bands, but there aren't too many that really are. Most of them are older, like Iron Maiden and Metallica, which are both great. But nowadays there are just so many subgenres that you can't really call anything that's new "metal."

Wow, that is not metal in the least. Listen to any Iron Maiden song and tell me Cattle Decapitation sounds like the same genre.

delossantosj,
He's got a point, that would be Death Metal, it might even qualify as Brutal Death Metal. Just "Metal" is the old-school stuff, the original stuff--Metallica (first few albums) and Iron Maiden.

Haha we're not hatin' dude, just trying to get you to see that true metal is not made anymore. Btw, Dream Theater is the best! Petrucci is a guitar god
