my favorite metal band is a progressive metal band named dream theater. greatest drummer of all time, amazing vocalist, one of the greatest guitarists and bassists. whats not to like??

death metal is the modern day true metal i think cause your right you dont see any old school stuff anymore cause times have changed. its sort of evolved into what it is now.
Dream Theater is okay. Petrucci is a great guitarist, but their drummer is overrated. They've got some great songs, though.
Ironically, the only kind of metal I really like is death metal. Classic heavy metal(Iron Maiden, Sabbath, etc.) seems just like glorified hard rock to me, I think thrash is boring, and stuff like grindcore, metalcore(most of it, I gotta admit there are some awesome metalcore bands) are just flat heaviness. I'm a huge fan of Opeth because they use the contrast in their sound to deliver an awesome experience with pretty much every song.
How? Barely Metal: Disturbed, Slipknot, and A7X I can see there. But the others? Classical Metal: Pantera, Metallica, Iron Maiden I mean...have you even heard of Brawl?
I rarely listen to metal. I prefer music where I can understand them and they are not just flat out screaming into a mike. But if I do listen to metal it is Metallica and Iron Maiden.

My other favorites would be local bands so it would do no good naming them because none of you guys have ever heard of any of them. But seriously, I like the local bands the best because usually when you listen to them, it's live, and live metal is the BEST! You get to mosh.
