One day i was thinking: wouldnt be life better without religion?
Why did i think that? There are a lot of reasons:
1.War. Since religion was created, there was wars. One religion again a other, just because they don't agree with each other. Or like WW2, it was for making a religion (christians) to become powerfull and killing other religions (jews). U.S.A think that "god" is on they side and start killing whatever by the name of god. And same thing with the terorists.
2.Stops Science. A lot of famous people like Galileo or Copernic where stoped, cause they didnt have the same point of view then the church. Darwin had a lot of problems, and people didnt believe him, just because it was against religion.
3.Injustice. Womens where lower in society then mens. Mostly in Indu or Muslim, the women couldnt do anything. Had to hide face, couldnt choose who to marry. Also, there wasnt any freedom of speech. If u think differently then the religion, you get killed, tortured or you get send to prison.
So. Here is a question: Wouldnt life be better without religion? Wouldnt we be like 50 years in the futur in science? Wouldnt everyone be happier without a religion? Just living your life normaly....
I fully agree. I believe religion is a crutch that we relied on when we didn't have access to the knowledge we do now. Now that we know how old the Earth is, what days/seasons are, etc. we have no real practical use for religion. Don't get me wrong, I'm not atheist, I just think religion is a waste of time and effort. Watch the movie religulous, it's more or less about this.
Some people find religion as their reason to live. It gives some people a purpose in life.
Also, if there was no religion, why would people act justly or morally? If there were no judgment... I think many people to stray from doing good...and thus the world might resort to a form chaos!
2.Stops Science. A lot of famous people like Galileo or Copernic where stoped, cause they didnt have the same point of view then the church. Darwin had a lot of problems, and people didnt believe him, just because it was against religion.
wouldn't it be hard to suddenly change your views? oh wait, just found out: Humans are derived from kangaroos. Believe me?
3.Injustice. Womens where lower in society then mens. Mostly in Indu or Muslim, the women couldnt do anything. Had to hide face, couldnt choose who to marry. Also, there wasnt any freedom of speech. If u think differently then the religion, you get killed, tortured or you get send to prison.
1. Justice is an opinion. 2. Could be just their culture that women are less than men. Remember ol' USA? Women weren't allowed to own property. Were we all Islamic back when?
I do think that religion's cons outweigh the pros, but not to say that the pros are non-existant.
Religion is only ever used to justify the evils carred out in its name, get rid of religion and something else will come along and take its place. War- People like to have something to follow and trust me, we will find pleanty or reasons to kill each other even without a God. Science can be stopped for a variety of reasons, in the past it was religion, but again that was only a justification. It's very hard to convince people that something they have always believed is wrong as in Darwin for example and people will mock, humiliate, even kill people who disagree with them or want radical change. Continuing with science, if it benefits the rulers it is always allowed, even religious leaders will use science to futher themselves. Remember, the leaders want power, and if science can give them power they will use it. Injustice, you don't need religion for that, all you need is one person with too much power, or one group for that matter. If those in power want something or it benefits them, they will find a way to get it. Getting rid of religion would only do one thing, cause a void, and that void will be filled. There will always be a "God", but if you get rid of the biblical one there are pleanty of power crazed men and women out there more than willing to take "God's" place.
You could say that the world would be better without religion, but I have a feeling, just by the way that humans work, religion would be replaced by some other type of belief or a prejudice of some sort so it wouldn't really matter anyway.
Every one of those things happens outside the context of religion.
Since humanity was created, there have been wars. Wars, genocides, whatever, have nothing to do with religion. There are always other reasons.
2.Stops Science. A lot of famous people like Galileo or Copernic where stoped, cause they didnt have the same point of view then the church. Darwin had a lot of problems, and people didnt believe him, just because it was against religion.
People tend to stop any advancement if they think it will adversely affect them.
Injustice has always been there, even since long before religion. Some people don't like another group, and put them lower.
lol that was what i was about to say...reading in my mind >.> lol
Great minds think alike, and apparently so do teenagers on the internet.
Second, "Jews" is not a religion, it's a nationality
Jews is the plural form of Jew, Jew is the noun form of Jewish, Jewish is an adjective referring to something relating to Judaism
When has USA "killed in the name of God". Name one war. Seriously.
I could be wrong, but didn't bush say he was on 'a mission of God' or something to that effect?
Terrorists practice a perverse form of Islam
All branches of Christianity were created when the original ideas were perverted.
Since humanity was created, there have been wars. Wars, genocides, whatever, have nothing to do with religion. There are always other reasons.
There are always reasons and religion is a reason, are you saying that religion has never been a main cause in any war?
People tend to stop any advancement if they think it will adversely affect them.
Learning about how things work (things that used to be explained with 'God did it' will more then adversely affect a priest or some other religion-dependent job.
Injustice has always been there, even since long before religion. Some people don't like another group, and put them lower.
Just because injustice was around before religion is not an excuse for religion to practice injustice.
Yeah sure, the Spanish Inquisition was like some 200,000 people right? Stalin and Hitler almost succeeded in killing millions of people for a religion free society to uncloud people's judgment.
And without religion there would have been 200,000 less deaths from the Spanish Inquisition. Just because religion did not cause the most deaths in war does not mean the deaths it caused do not matter.
I read somewhere that without the big Christian movement in the middle ages, our technology would be one-thousand years more advanced. Whatever that means.
I'd just like to point out that the term 'Jew' has no ties to nationality. I believe the word you're looking for is Israelite. Say it with me. IZ-REE-ALL-ITE. That wasn't too hard, was it?
If 'Jew' were a nationality, them Palestinians wouldn't be shooting people in my aunts village, would they?
Almost took the words right out of my mouth as well.
When has USA "killed in the name of God". Name one war. Seriously.
rafterman had a decent example, while not the USA exactly it was it's leader.
While not a war, one thing that comes to mind for killing in the name of God are the witch trials.
Yes we would still have war without religion but we would have seen far less of it and far less support for it.
People tend to stop any advancement if they think it will adversely affect them.
If it wasn't for religion this would have happened far less.
Injustice has always been there, even since long before religion. Some people don't like another group, and put them lower.
True but many of these injustices were vastly prolonged and justified as a direct result to religion. Some continue on even today.
Many scientists (jeez I think I even made a thread about this) like these two, continued their studies in order to get CLOSER to proving the existence of God. Of course, people took it the wrong way.
If religion didn't exist these people could have been searching for truth with out looking for God.
Now I have seen positive reactions as a direct result to having religion. For instance I knew someone who kept getting into trouble with the law, doing drug, etc. After becoming a born again he managed to clean himself up and last I heard he was married to a very nice girl. It really turned his life around from last I saw him.
So I agree with what Graham said.
I do think that religion's cons outweigh the pros, but not to say that the pros are non-existant.
I read somewhere that without the big Christian movement in the middle ages, our technology would be one-thousand years more advanced. Whatever that means.
With our modern technology and understanding of the world we are finding out more about the ancient Greeks and Romans. Finding out that they essentially had created almost everything we had, but without electricity. While the Roman Empire was destroyed by barbarians, it was the catholic church that suppressed their knowledge and thus threw the western world into the dark ages.
I read somewhere that without the big Christian movement in the middle ages, our technology would be one-thousand years more advanced. Whatever that means.
Or probably closer to "that type of speculation is absurd."
How is it absurd? We have a period in time that not only destroyed existing human accomplishments made before it, but suppressed the development of them for hundreds of years.
