I have been in class when suddenly i was interrupted by a mentally retarded kid. Literal retarded. I want to know if you think having mentally challenged kids inn school is more help than harm? It is known that mentally challenged kids do not learn nor get anything out of going to schools, but are put in bec. their parents demanded it.
I don't know all that much about the mentally challenged. Even though their learning skills are limited, I beleive that they are exposed to school so that they can grow familure with their surroundings and learn how to act in public as well as how to treat other people.
Is he actually in you class? I remember that they had a seperate class in my high school for the mentally challenged.
yes he is in my class, and is in many cases a disturbance, but everyone is to nice to say anything, he has an aid, but she can only do so much, i also have a friend that is a teacher that teaches, aka babysits these mentally challenged kids, she says they are violent and in some cases hit her and others but get to stay bec. their parents threaten to sue the school.
I had a mentally challenged kid in my PE class in middle school. He was so hilarious. mike and I would hang out with him sometimes because just about everything he did was so funny.
Is this a private school? Because I believe all public schools are required to have a special ed department. Or maybe that's just for the state of California...
their parents demanded it.
Or, perhaps, because the law states that you must go to school until you're 16 years old.
no no no, the law doesn't imply to mentally challenged children, and this is a public school, and there is a department, or classroom for them, but they still are brought to certain classes thought the day. This is in PA, but prob. aplys to most states.
Well we got one too in our school. But i pity him. His schoolmates are relentless against him. And the ones who take care of the class at the breaks are saying to him: You will buy me 2 chocolate bars with your money otherwise i will tell to the principal that you were all the break inside the classroom and you weren't getting out! Of course the kid was not in the classroom but this is happening every day to our school and he keeps buying them chocolate and other stuff. I believe he shouldn't be in school!
and there is a department, or classroom for them, but they still are brought to certain classes thought the day.
Not sure why your school would hold classes with both mentally handicapped and non mentally handicapped students. That seems like it would be detrimental to both groups since they are on different educational levels.
But as to why would they have them in school at all. We are social animals, school offers a great opportunity to socialize. So even if they don't learn, they get to interact with others, which in itself is a benefit.
i have no idea what type of school you go to but isnt it supposed to be a school for the normal children? but thats SORTA nice to have mental kids there.......

Really? Tell me, how do you know this? Mentally handicapped people actually can learn and benefit from going to schools. There are many types of mentally handicapped people, and many ways that one can be considered mentally handicapped. There are many cases where they are, in fact, capable of learning, the only issue is that their brains do not connect with their bodies as well as the rest of us. Even if it is a person who really can never develop past a certain point, it is still beneficial.
The learning experiences and the social experiences can help them greatly. There are many who are often to afraid or to unmotivated to speak. Many know that there is something different and wrong with them, so that keeps them from working on it. However, when put around other people who are in an everyday setting, they can learn from it and improve.
I have seen mentally handicapped students tell other students jokes, with genuine laughs being produced, because believe it or not (and get ready for this, I think you, mister tom, will find this a shocker!), they have working brains.
I think that mentally challenged people should have their own schooling with teacher specialized to their needs. When I was in school, there was this mentally retarded kid who would stare at all the girls and sexually harass them. This made the girls very uncomfortable but the teachers insisted that they just deal with it. I thought this was a load of bull$%*^ and that the damn kid doesn't deserve to do whatever the hell he wants just because he has a mental disorder. The normal children shouldn't have to suffer just because the mental kid's parents want him to be included.
Ok, I've noticed that a quite a few of the people project a strong dislike of the mentally challenged aren't using proper English grammer and are spelling things wrong. You're stupid. They want to learn and try to, but they don't have the head start the "average" or "normal" person has. Now, SOME of them ought be restricted to thier own schools because some are violent or disruptive, or don't know how to behave like a civilized human being. The ones that just have limited mental faculties (I'm including the idiots disregarding all usage of grammer here) can go to regular school if they want to. They have every right to learn, just like everyone else. And mental disorders are completely different from being a retard. You can be a schizo and have a great learning potential, idiot. So if they can behave, they can go to regular school.
I agree that they need teachers who are trained for that purpose, and I do feel that there needs to be the same rules taught to them as everyone else. However, it is important to keep them in society and in public, healthy environments. Just like everyone else.
Here is one thing I want you all to think about... Have you ever wondered if really, they do have the ability to figure things out and to follow rules... But they just realize that they are able to get away with so much more by just giving in? What if that part of their brain is fully functional? Think on that for a moment.
i think you are mistaken, thee are different severeness of mental retardation, semi-retarded children can learn with limitations, but full on retarded children do little to no learning, and even if they do learn, why are they in my school if they are a HUGE disturbance, this isn't for ALL retarded students, just the disruptive ones. If i where to be extremely disruptive on a day to day basis, then i would be removed, they are not though.
Tom, there are disruptive students in school that AREN'T mentally retarded. On a day to day basis. They are rednecks. Should they all be removed? No. I don't care if they stick chewing tobacco in books, school is an opportunity to learn and communicate with Society.
but full on retarded children do little learning compared to standard students
Fixed. Everyone can learn. As long as they have 1 I.Q. they can learn.
