Please no ridiculous or idiotic comments. And no hating on beliefs either. My belief: Accept God is the only God and Jesus was your savior, the only way to Heaven, other choice an eternity with the Devil in Hell.
Found this video explaining from a former Christians point of view on the subject of death. I can't speak for everyone but I think it most likely echos the views of many atheists.
I don't really beleive in a afterlife ina sense, but I think, yes. Our bodies rot into the ground, and our conscious as we know it, will die. Thats the reality of it, but, You never know until you do die.
I persoanlyl believe that you should live your life to the fullest. I don't care for the afterlife. I would rather be obliterated, body and soul, if I had a soul, from this planet, and be non existant when I die. I don't want to go on forever. That means I have to live with myself for etrnity, and thats a nightmare.
Whatever the case, if there is anything of a afterlife, I would believei n this. We go across a river, or the tunnel that we say, which is the chemical process. And as we rot, we flow back into the ground, and we cross that river.
Once we do, there is no going back. And then, you sink into the mud there, and then you are reborn, but not as yourself, in this world. So a little bit of reincarnation.
But I don't want a afterlife. But thats how I imagined it.
Does it really matter? Because everyone shares one important belief. We ALL die. Then none of this REALLY matters. Either we go to an afterlife based on the standards a greater being of choice set for all, or we just die, or we become something else. Death is the common truth here. Can we all agree on that?
Think of it this way, are you still at school, after-school?
I look at after school as an addition to school agreed?
is that seriously his name? he sounds more like a porn star than a pastor.
If you clicked on cweb's link you would see.

We are just trying to keep ourselves entertained and wondering about other's beliefs.

Maybe not entirely, I mean can you really consider an afterlife where you keep on going for eternity truly dying?
As to what it matters. The truth in and of itself I think matters. But besides that an understanding of the processes of death could help us better understand how to prolong life. This understanding would be incomplete if we left out what happens to us after we die.
I also wish to put more phycology... Dub, you proved a point I am about to bring up earlier with "That makes me sad even thinking about it" as in death with no afterlife. Every riligion I have heard of has an afterlife. Todays riligons used the fear of the masses in everything in "Join us or live in a burning hole once you die! And if you do join us, then you will live in a paradise once you die!" And maney people believed in even wizards, dragons, and everything we don't even find remotly plausable, like beating people whould heal them. Many people wish to believe that they are immortal, or that by praying they can be safe from everything. When I was a kid I wanted to believe. A failed prayer was one of the final nails in the casket, and I whent into doupt. Then I tricked myself into believing I was going to be a chemist that whould find the philoshophers stone and be immortal... But on topic, riligon is just a security blanket.
Why would it matter to you though? Since you stated that you do not believe in the afterlife why would it matter if you missed anything or wished for something. You said once your dead your dead
I didn't mean "wish for something" after I'm dead. I meant that I would live my life so I don't have anything to wish for or that I'm missing, period.
I can't even describe what happens the way you said it really.
I can help simulate it, if you wanna try it out. Go out into an empty, barren room in your house. Make it pitch black, have it so no sound is audible at all, and just lay on your back motionless. Try not to think about something at all. This is a simulated death experience, except for the fact that real death means that you don't know you're dead.
