I get mad when i see Spanish subtitles on boxes or a Spanish news channel, i wonder how far is to far. I do not hate immigrants but i demand them to learn English if they come here. here are my reasons.
#1. If Spanish is on a cereal box why isn't everyone language known to man, not every one speaks English or Spanish in America.
#2. A country needs a dominant language to be successful and and to unite everyone in a way.
#3. Language should be like currency, you should have one main one, not a bunch.

i do not think people should only know English, i encourage learning other languages, but putting multiple languages on all items can lead to problems, and possible decrease communication in the USA.

I'm Canadian, and our two national languages are English and French. Now I could explain to you why those two are our languages, but I'll safe the Americans some time.

What I don't get is, why do you have a problem with Spanish on a Spanish news network/channel? Does it bother you that much?

It had been proved in a study, that those children that spoke two languages, had more knowledge and understanding of the world then those that spoke one.

Multilingual is a gift of communication. You do not really expect someone who has been speaking a language all his life to adopt and learn a new one simply because YOU have a problem with it.

What if you were told you had to speak a new language because someone didn't like seeing English news on the TV?

#1. If Spanish is on a cereal box why isn't everyone language known to man, not every one speaks English or Spanish in America.

Common sense. We use two, those two go way back to our history. We do fine with both.

#2. A country needs a dominant language to be successful and and to unite everyone in a way.

Wrong. We're doing fine. We may have disagreements relating culture, but, it has united us a long the way. We are proud of our history.

#3. Language should be like currency, you should have one main one, not a bunch.

What? Alright, that means get rid of the rest of the culture(s) right? Only have one language? Wrong.

You must know that many of the US states were originally held by the Spanish right? First settlers aside from the Natives, respect the culture your country was built on.

I highly doubt that... Seeing as how (as far as I know) there are quite a few immigrants in the USA who don't know english very well - having cereal boxes with other languages on them will actually benefit the quality of communication.

As for #2 and #3, I completely agree. But rather than banning other languages, I'd say the proper solution is to enable each and every immigrant to take good english lessons. (Assuming these don't already exist - I wouldn't know, I'm not from the USA)

Spanish news channels are usually filmed in Spain, or maybe Mexico in your case. They just use some of the same channels in Spain and Mexico as they do in the English speaking countries.

Honestly, this comes off as so ignorant. You demand that they learn English? What's up in the states? I've noticed more and more hostility toward immigrants.

I do think it's good to learn other languages, but I would rather not have to learn another one just so I can order some fast food from down the street. True story, happened at a KFC.

About a year ago I had a mexican guy in my back yard at 2am and I am sure he did not speak English, but he knew what the shot gun in my hands meant.

Countries should have a main language, but that doesn't mean bar other languages from being used in many different ways. I have no clue why there are different languages on a cereal box (it's food with no instructions), but it is essential to have multiple languages on objects and in places that require the masses to know something, such as important information or instructions/regulations. Spanish is just more common, since Spanish is a big-chunk percentage of the national languages spoken.

I'm positive the same could be said of the Spanish when they see English subtitles on their land. You cannot expect America to be the only nation to have subtitles of minor languages everywhere.

My point is, it is necessary and sometimes vital for there to be subtitles for multiple languages in places, but there are some situations where it is just plain silly (the cereal box).

Trying living in California. White people are almost the minority. Companies print the language they are marketing to. Because there is a vast Hispanic population, it would make sense to print the product in Spanish to get more Hispanic customers.

Dude, this fucking America! The mixing pot. America is known for accepting all people no matter what ethnicity and culture they are from. Making English the only official language is incredible backwards and very KKK like.

Why do you have against cultures different than yours?

What an ironic title. Yes, if you come to live in a country you should learn to understand the language, but on the other hand, is it really worth making a kerfuffle about subtitles and box labels? This is a sign of integration, not resistance to it. When we had resistance, we had ghettos and Chinatowns where people were forced to make a little island of their past existence rather than become a member of their new home.

America likes to take credit for English. It's our language, not yours. Notice it's called "English" rather than "American." We let you speak it, so let the Spanish speak their language. Otherwise, we'll take our language back and force you to speak Russian.

Every American descends from some kind of immigrant (even native Americans orignially came from Asia). If you're going to bash immigrants, you're bashing yourself too.

I agree with whyismynametom, that people moving to a country should learn that countries first language, some what it's just common sense. Would you move to Russia without knowing a single word of Russian?

I think Denmark or Norway has been voted the #1 country and there law is you have to learn their first language to go into the country. If their the #1 country then we should do that to.

In the case of the USA, most Mexican immigrants move there for a better life, not for a cultural experience. If I lived in a country right next to Russia that had a horrible economy along with many other problems, I'd move to Russia, even though I don't know a word of Russian.
