What do you think about this? I feel that it should not be built at ground zero because I find that extremely disrespectful to the families and victims of that infamous day.

First of all, it's not being built ON Ground Zero, it's being built a few blocks away.

Second, there is only ONE reason I'm against the mosque being built where they're proposing to build it: The safety of those who will be attending it, and the adjoined community center. With some many New Yorkers against it, I feel like there's a high possibility of violence.

Besides that, there's absolutely no reason to be against it. Every single person in America has the right to freedom of religion. We can't associate every person who practices Islam with terrorists. Last time I checked, Christians did some really disturbing things too. Are we judging a whole religion because of some extremists from the past? No. As a matter of fact, there's a bloody church within a stone's throw of EVERY WHERE in America now. But, shouldn't it be considered offensive to build a church on the land we took from the Native Americans we decimated? Why isn't it wrong to build a Christian holy center on Indian burial grounds? Why is it okay that we took over a country, and forced the Native Americans, who were here first, onto piece of crap reservations?

In addition, the Imam behind the mosque is a known for his liberal interpretation of Islam. CNN's Fareed Zakaria was quoted as saying Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf's view on Islam was "Osama bin Laden's nightmare".

Basically -- you CANNOT demonize an entire religion because of some extremists. It's completely wrong. We should be encouraging this kind of interpretation of Islam, not automatically associating it with evil.

I figure you cant do that with any group, as the ones who speak against otehrs are often the worst.

What?! I thought that the mosque/Muslim religion center was on a floor of the Ground Zero monument!

Nope, it's like 2 or 3 blocks away.

I think they should make the whole area a multi-cultural hub - what better way to show diversity and tolerance? Maybe build a few shrines, a synagogue... Ooh and a Starbucks.

I agree with the idea, in basic, and I think that it should definitely be allowed if this were a perfect world not comprised almost entirely of idiots, but it is not so. If this mosque is built then people are probably going to get violent about it, so on the basis of that it probably shouldn't get built. I mean...I think it should be able to get built, freedom of religion and all, I just think that it shouldn't be built because it would be very dangerous, if you can understand that.

How about if we throw some Grenadier Guards around the perimeter of the whole place?!
Also adds some British theme in the mix
Or you could just get a couple of youths off the streets in Liverpool, whichever you prefer.

I'm Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone, but WHY did they have to build a mosque near the site where 3000 americans died of a religous attack and WHY are they opening It on the anniversity of said attack next year? I'm sorry, but it just can't happen. It doesn't matter what purpose this is for, it can't happen. so many americans lost so much on this day and our elected leader doesn't say anything about the men lost, Just about freedom of religion. PLEASE JUST BUILD IT SOMEWHERE ELSE! This Isn't about freedom of religion, this is about the American blonn spilled on the concrete. It is hollowed ground, and It will never be forgiven. sadly, It was SO bad that no one even closely related to this attack should be able to touch it. I'm sorry.

And there are no American Muslims who may worship at this mosque? And there were no American Muslims killed in the attacks? Do you really think that being American excludes you from being a Muslim??

#1 I'm always suspicious of people who apologize for their opinion.
If I apologize at the beginning of a sentence it's because I made an error with a previous post.

#2 Then, you end your comment with another apology. I haven't even read you entire comment yet and already I'm on the hunt.

#3 Okay, now I've read it and once again you apologize at the end of the first, run on sentence.

#4 Your statements are emotionally motivated. I get that. You need to look towards the future and let the dead bury the dead.

#5 Because this very ground, as you say correctly is hallowed. What better way to preserve it as sacred by placing a church synagogue or mosque on the site?

#6 This will not tarnish the memories of our fellow brothers and sisters who fell that day, so courageously. As I'm sure you well remember that the passengers on the second plane knew very well before the plane dipped its wing down, that they would all die.

#7 I still have a poster of NYC when the twin towers were still new. I cherish this but I also look forward to visiting ground zero and I would look forward to visiting a mosque, church or synagogue.

#8 I wouldn't like it if I lived in NYC or at least worked in the city every day only to stare at an ugly hole in the earth for 9+ years. It's beyond time to rebuild. I think constructing a place of worship is the most fitting tribute we can offer. To show the world that we are Americans and we do accept freedom of religion, without persecution.
