This is not about whether or not he was the son of God but whether he actually existed. Most atheists agree that he did live but there are some who don't so what are you're thoughts?
We are all in agreement that he was a real person, so this thread can now be formally shut down.
no its fact that he was real but its your choice to believe wether he was the messiah or not
I vehemently disagree with Jesus' existence as a matter of fact. For a long time I figured he was a real guy whose message was either delusional or misinterpreted. But after learning about Mithra and the legends surrounding him, the are too many live alternative to Jesus' very existence for me to accept it. And these alternative are enough to make his existence a matter of contention, not a matter of fact.
I think he was real as part of my religon says that only Gods words are put into the Bible and there is information how Jesus was born and about his life. So I think theres enough proof saying that Jesus is real.
Well, yes, but there's also information about how... let's say... Unicorns are born. It's written in plenty of books - that doesn't make it fact.
Well it's also written in the Bible, so that makes it a fact! ... Just kidding But there are really unicorns in the Bible^^
So I think theres enough proof saying that Jesus is real.
LOL you're totally right...
But back to the topic: I think that Jesus' historical existence isn't really proven. There are only few (non-Christian) sources and these are questionable.
There are several non-biblical sources for Jesus' life Pliny the Younger and the Jewish historian Josephus both mention Jesus' existence and the fact that he performed some miracles. Neither go into great detail but He did apparently do enough for them to mention Him.

Josephus's writings were likely either tampered with or out right forged. Pliny Does not provide independent verification but just states there were Christians living in the area.
Sure, except that he wasn't even born until nearly 30 years after Jesus was supposedly crucified, so his records are not eye witness accounts.
Josephus
Again, not alive at the time of Jesus. If his birth year, and the year of Jesus' execution are accurate, then Josephus would have been born 5 years after the crucifixion of Jesus.
They were born after Jesus lived but apparently he was important enough for a mention by those historians, after all, there were thousands of Christians at the time they wrote.
There is also the fact that Christianity spread so fast after Jesus died in spite of fierce persecution. In the beginning Islam spread by the sword, at the time it was politically advantageous to become a muslim. At the very least something caused people to be willing to give up everything for no material gain with the knowledge that they could and would die for their beliefs.
Can anyone shed some light on the prophet "eter" who was supposedly around 30 years or so b4 jesus. His life mirrored jesus's and I seem to remember that he was the basis for the jesus story.
This is heresay for me right now, as I cannot seem to find it anywhere (I admit that I have not looked like a mad bloodhound tho)
Jesus was a real man. The Christian church exaggerated him and made him into a divine being, but he was a very wise, very real, man.
It is not possible for Jesus to have been 'just a wise man'. If he was not who He said He was then He was either a lunatic or a liar. If he was wise, but not divine then He was a liar, because of the things he said. If He honestly believed the things He said but He was wrong then how was He wise?
