When that view is held by the majority of the free market, then it'll happen. I enjoy CoD a lot, though I think its time to give the series its final game.
So the Free Market will decide such a shift. Today, it wants mindless multiplayer shooters. Tomorrow, who knows? Though given the success of Fallout 3/New Vegas, Dragon Age, etc, I'd say that we'll start to see games with more RPG elements.

Yes, I've been seeing more games that have an RPG element around lately. You're also right about the market shifting to different game types. Oh, and remember to actually LOOKat the other games that are different genres. Sometime sooner or later, that type of gaming genre may become the next craze. You never know what the market's gonna do...

Well the rumor floating around the internet right now is "COD:Iron Wolfe" which is named after a covert operations team established in the late eighties to early nineties. As for IW, who knows, I can only hope that it's something new, like a post apocalyptic one.

And maybe Dice could focus on games like Mirror's Edge and IW could come up with a new title so they wouldn't have only made CoD and expansions.
They're leads on the market, they're entitled to what they're doing (which I would add "sadly" for Infinity Ward and Treyarch, but still) and them backing off to let other FPS developers get bigger sounds... fantasmal, at best.

They want something as a relaxing past time - CoD delivers on that. RPG Elements give perseverance and the sense of achievement even if it means very little. Hardcore games that require dedication such as vanilla World of Warcraft dissipated since they do not apply to a wide market, relative to the growing gaming community.
More RPG elements? Certainly, but there still isn't that much true variety in how games are played.
I'm soo exited for mw3!! I pre ordered, saw all the trailers, and already have 30 minuets of double XP time from mtn dew!! I'm very excited but sadly it comes out the day before a big test, so I wont be able to play

So i have cod mw2 preodered and i cant wait for it come out!! I hope quickscoping is not messed up like it is in black ops. I quickscope in mw2 and im not that bad. I can usually go even or a little better with 14-21 kills.
