It's argued that black is not a colour, it is the absence of colour.

But if I go to buy a new car, I don't ask for a car that is absent of colour do I? I ask for a black car.

So which is it, is black a colour or not?

It depends on how you look at it

Scientifically - black is not a colour as it is not apart of the 7 basic colours of the colour spectrum

Artistically - black is not a colour, it is a shade

Generally/popularly - Black is colour, for it gives distinction and description to an object, like other colours do

Schizophrenically - Black is not a colour, it is a friend who tells me all the evil things the government wants to do to me

Probably not, but it sure is fun to debate about it.

I, for one, do not believe that black is a color. Black is created when an object perfectly absorbs all frequencies of light on the color spectrum. Thus, it does not reflect any light back towards us, and should it be considered a color, it would be a hue less one.
