personally for me it was back before MW3 and BF3 and skyrim even though those are all great games i miss back when it was mainly just black ops and MW2. now when i go back to black ops and see how few people are playing it compared to what it used to be like it's just sad because now everyone's playing MW3 which is one of COD's off games, now maybe for me it's that way because that's how everything was when i got Xbox live but in my opinion MW2 has some of the best MP in any game and black ops was still really good and i miss back when everyone seemed to be playing MW2 or black ops. share your feelings(not like "i'm hungry" kind of feelings) and your opinion of the good old days for video games
the days of gamecube were pretty cool i kinda miss it a little but i probably won't go back to it at least not for awhile, a few weeks after me and my brother got our Xbox 360 we wanted to go back to our PS2 and play star wars battlefront and battlefront 2 then we played it and realized it sucked, so some games are better left a memory
Hahaha are you kidding? The N64 had its processing power in its VERY NAME to show its graphical superiority. I hate to be that guy, but graphical superiority has been in the foreground since the SNES.
Ahem. Minecraft. Despite the fact that the graphic specs were in the name, the N64 still lagged behind the Playstation and Sega Saturn in terms of graphical capacity (came with sticking to cartridges) but was a driving force when it came to the quality of its games. The developers didn't have to worry about getting the graphics to be oh-so-realistic, they worked with their minimal visual resources and created Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Banjo-Kazooie.
Just like knowledge of video games shouldn't be required to enjoy a game you like without being called "ignorant" or "representing everything that is wrong", especially since it's based on subjective premises like "true innovation and quality" and "the glory days of gaming", which will be different for every single person you ask.
Knowledge of the history allows a greater spectrum of understanding on the present. Knowing history will allow the skipping over of mistakes made. Knowledge is power, and key in determining quality. Quality is not subjective, with enough experience a person can achieve a status where himself and a handful of colleagues can successfully assert what tropes, tricks, mechanics, and styles work well on creating fantastic experiences, and what ones are stagnant duds. The Glory Days are as such because of wide critical acceptance of a legion of works that released during the time period. Sure, a few stray opinions may exist, but the generally accepted title remains cemented.
*slow clap* Good job on entirely missing the point.

Nice spin by the way. But the Nintendo 64 was actually the console with the best hardware and graphical capabilities of the three. The format of games (cartridges vs CDs) has nothing to do with their graphics either.
And for being such a "driving force when it came to the quality of its games" it sure did a good job getting trumped by Sony, sales-wise.

Uh huh. Now that you've given a superficial description of game design, explain why the consumer has to know any of these things, which was the entire point. Because they don't.
As for quality being objective: No. Everyone has different tastes, so creating something of quality that appeals to absolutely everyone is impossible.
Similarly, someone can dislike a critically acclaimed game for any number of reasons. And if you don't like something, then it's obviously not of quality to you.

These exist for any given "era" in video games. As for opinions on games, I refer you to the comic on page 2.

Its quite understandable actually seeing as the N64 came out first and I have seen some NES games that has better Graphics then the PSONE Just check out some DKC backgrounds and Foregrounds. Personal favorites of the era of these consoles were DK64 Mario 64 Banjo Kazooie Duke3D remake Gex super smash bros.
You may think I'm pretty stupid for saying this, but I think that the newer games are these "glory days". Stuff like MW2, MW3, Skyrim, and Batman: Arkham City.

I don't think that remake and almost completely pointless game (MW3) would really be glorified maybe if you said COD3 back when call of duty had a point and wasn't just a multiplayer game with a bad story to it. Glory days were back when everyone didn't play the same game and everyone tried to beat the game they played. There were quests to games and side missions were worth doing. Every one didn't care about achievements the world didn't worry about competing in gaming competitions. Back when everyone just played for fun and games were so expensive and when your buddies would come over and play some good old split screen or taking turn on games. Back when people had friends in real life that played with them not when they had Xbox or PSN friends. Back when you would call someone up (not text them) and say hey you wanna come over and play some super smash bros or try to beat Zelda as fast as we can. Those were the glory days for me.

i hear you man not so much MW3 the campaign and spec ops are good but the multiplayer isn't so much

i wasn't aware that CoD had a story i had the volume to low to hear the voices when i played and i just had a week rental and to be honest i was kinda relieved when the rental was up, the campaign was long and repeditive so i was kinda glad i didn't have to deal with it anymore. then about a year and a half ago my friend brought over world at war and we played the campaign a little which was fun then we started playing Nazi zombies and it was only the original map and ever since then i've been hooked on CoD
