Forums → WEPR → Why Do Atheists Celebrate Christmas?

I would like to know why atheists feel that they have the right to celebrate Christmas. And even worse, WHAT THE HECK GIVES ATHEISTS THE RIGHT to insist on cutting out the word Christmas from everything? Example: they changed it from CHRISTMAS tree to HOLIDAY tree.
Now how stupid is that? The trees are meant FOR CHRISTMAS! That's what the 'holiday' in holiday tree stands for, CHRISTmas. So, fire on me all you want, I just want some answers.

So Christians think too much of themselves? What of atheists, the youngest religion yet(Besides Googlism)?
this is why i'm glad i have no religion.
anyway, atheists seem to think too much of them selves just like christians.

Atheist by definition is a lack of belief in a deity. How is that a religion?

Just because I'm all that and some doesn't mean I have an ego. :P
I'm agnostic, and celebrate Christmas because it's a family tradition. To me it's about the eggnog, gift-giving, movies, Santa Clause, etc. I don't view it as a religious holiday, and when I have my own family I will put lights on the house, but not Jesus in his manger in the yard.
Christmas has become the default holiday in America, so most people celebrate it, whether they are Christian or not. Personally, I believe that Holiday is the best occasion to celebrate during the Winter months.
they celebrate christmas to spend time with family and have fun christians celebrate for the same reason most of the time because they get caught up in the presents and whatever and just dont even think about it so yah pretty much everyone celebrates for the same reason

Just because you don't celebrate it like that doesn't mean that it's not recognized as a religious holiday.
because the idea of christmas is "giving" and "receiving" and spending time with the family.
They celebrate the idea not actually christmas itself of Christ dying for everyone.

Most atheists are modest, and it makes you sound pretty full of yourself to accuse atheists of having large egos.
EI: I'm not running around like a chicken with its' head cut off screaming "YOU CHRISTIANS DON'T DESERVE TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS CHRIST WASNT BORN ON CHRISTMAS STOP STEALING OUR RELIGIONS STOP USING OUR TREES ITS NOT ABOUT CELEBRATING JESUS' BIRTH ITS ABOUT HAPPINESS" even though all of that is true. I'm calmly stating that Jesus was not born on December the 25th and I'm telling you the reason there's a holiday on the 25th in the first place.
Difference.
Just because you don't celebrate it like that doesn't mean that it's not recognized as a religious holiday.
It's not recognized as a religious holiday. It's recognized as a widely celebrated holiday that spans several religions, including those without religion, because of the tradition and giving and love connected to it.
Christ dying
*whispers* christ being born *whispers*

Alrighty. I haven't read all the posts before mine so forgive me if I repeat things...
Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ...which didn't occur at this time of year. So if you want to celebrate the birth of Christ...maybe do it on the day he was born?
Then you have the fact that most of the symbols that are most associated with Christmas, the Christmas tree for example, is reminiscent of Pagan worship. That's not Christian either...although it still doesn't explain why Atheists would celebrate Christmas because Paganism does involve the idea of gods.
And now we reach the reason I celebrate Christmas. Some would say it's all about materialism now but I think that's a load. Christmas is one day when everyone focuses on giving to others. I spend more time thinking about what to get others than what I will recieve on Christmas morning. Giving to the less fortunate skyrockets at this time of year. Christmas, while performing a wonder for big businesses is based in Socialist views of sharing and equality
I support Christmas on a political basis not religious. And seeing as so few people celebrate Christmas based purely on Christian religion, and it's improper date. The only real attatchment Christmas has to Christ is the name...and I'm not even too sure about that one I would have to do some research =P
What right do you have to deny me a day where my family gathers, eats together, and exchanges presents?

That's great I'm going to pass that one along next time I hear someone moaning about how materialistic the holiday has become.
If Jesus had not been born, Christmas would not exist. Then if Christmas wouldnt exist we could make another Holiday having the same bases as Christmas, except not having to do with Jesus.
Christmas was originally a pagan festival used by religious leaders in the past to in a way "advertise" christianity.
That is one possible theory.
And to the guys saying America was founded by christians who believed in christ, Im sure those guys were diests or just secular.
After I cleared that up, Atheists can celebrate christmas for a number of reasons.
They wants to.
Presents.
Fun.
To annoy religious nuts.
Because thier family does.
And because you can't stop them.
