Welcome to the Art Skills Competition 2014/2015, or "ASC" for short. It is a contest to gather willing artists from the forums to compete in a friendly test of their skills and reward the best of their work each round.
Rounds will take place each month, the last day of the month will be the final cutoff for any entries. The judging will take place the first week of the following month.
___________________________________________________________________
Competition Guidelines :
1. The entry must be 100% original material.
2. Each round lasts for a month; closing date is at the end of that month.
3. Submissions should be relevant to the current month's theme. (See thread's title)
4. Keep posts resolutions within reason and if you must have a larger resolution, link it to the entry.
5. Entries can be created in any medium, please note that it will be appreciated if hand drawn entries are cropped to contain only the intended work.
6. Winners will be announced by the judge of the competition at the end of each round; the results are final and non-debatable.
7. The winner of a round will have the right to choose the next theme; if this takes too long, the judge will choose one instead.
8. All participants of each round will receive a Merit for their hard work; the winner of each round will receive the Armor Games "Artist Quest"!
Round 1: Knight
This months theme will be dedicated to creating a knight representing that of Armor Games, it is a non official character to try and stir the imaginations of artists and viewers. The artist should endeavor to embody Armor Games in a Knightly character.
This is well beyond any conceivable deadline, so I do not expect it to be counted among the entries. However, I've just started my first real holiday in over two years, so to kick it off I thought I'd throw in some messily sketched nostalgia. I haven't drawn anything in over half a year so I'm pretty rusty lol
I wonder how many users even remember the Way of Moderation... perhaps Hectic will. They might realise this is the most detail with which I've ever bothered to draw our spaminator of old, Flipski.
If it's not displaying properly just click the image. I suspect Photobucket scaled it down, though.
@Strop First of all, finally hello, and enjoy your holidays!
Second I actually do remember it and its awesomeness. Even though I was too young back then to swallow years of wrting material in one go, I have (almost) finished it now. In fact I was amazed by it even then! XD
I recognized Flipski on first sight And it actually is the most detailed drawing of him, having read the WoM and seen the artwork. You're right.
But I've never seen him on a bike before I like the depiction!
With all the entries this round and the limits on my time I find it was tough to thoroughly judge each piece
So here we go.
Zophia
While an excellent piece I do not think it fits the theme greatly. I think that it looks too much like an insect even with the description of the Auto bug the exoskeleton could be just that without being robotic, the flower and tree sapling are really biological looking and it for me doesnt fit the mechanical idea of a robot.
Cenere
I know that I am missing something in the phrase, though given that it seems to be more of a ghost than a machine to me that throws it way into left field. Perhaps I would understand it better if I read the book but sadly I have not.
apldeap123
With the lack of a 3rd dimension this seems to project to me something of a movie reel machine more than a robot, I would suggest finding a better perspective or add a bit more detail.
Stormwalker
I would call this a quick sketch at best, the lack of consistancy in the main subject and the sparse level of detail would make it seem like something that was done quickly.
SirLegendary
While I think the line art is good it could be improved by having more contrasting colors and forming a difference between the background and line are. I assume you wanted to model a human skeleton for the machine. But I would suggest trying to go beyond bones and add in some more levels to that reference, synthetic muscle would be interesting. Even connect the bones with some sort of binding. it just seems the structure is in pieces.
Arm_Candy
A classic robot shape though I do not understand why it seems he is melting. Normally when I think of melting metal it is hot and vibrant in color but there are ways to dissolve metals such as acid. But besides the theme I think it is pretty good You might want to look into a bit of lighting techniques to add more depth to the drawing.
akshobhya
Its a good robot/jukebox mix and the colors are vibrant I would like to see this developed more by taking it even further beyond using simple shapes and fills. I do not know if you have access to tools beyond a mouse But I can tell you that if you do not you might want to find out how to draw things with a mouse. I am sure there are methods of going beyond simple shapes.
huwbert2013
The texture is an excellent shiny metal, I like that you tried to include curves with the shape. Though you might want to work on your shadows and lighting a bit. the shadow on the ground isnt reflective of the highlights on the body.
kegaumongo
A lovely little robot, I don't know if its the influence of The Wizard of Oz with the tin man but a lot of robots need hearts and brains , I am sure you were trying to go for a paper cutout style but even so I would like to see a bit more shadows, that backgorund makes me feel like i need sunglasses
koshionos
High-speed robot ant? I like it but it seems a little unpolished, you could clean up the lines and add a bit more detail with textures
mrdaycee
Nice references to the starwars stuff that is going on currently the only real problem is the copy pasted background and foregrounds :P
Pickpocket
Was this inspired by the latest avengers movie? Anyways its a good cyborg though you might want to practice drawing more mechanical things, look at things like engines and machines to get a better idea on how mechanical things move and connect.
ChromeDeathRazor
Out of all of the drawing I think this one had the best theme, or at least presented it in a way that didn't use simplified symbols. With a bit more sharpness to the robots details and a less hastily added background this could be a well made drawing.
Winner weirdlike
So now we are down to the duckbot 9000 :P, I give you the award for the most detailed/mechanical looking drawing but you lose points for a bad background and lack of lighting effects.
So Weirdlike can choose a theme but I have a new idea to stir up trouble and test your grit. Those who use 3d modelling in the next round will receive extra kudos towards the winners slot. I think that this should even the playing field a bit given the return of Cenere, Zophia, and Strop are discouraging a few folks. Good luck and I recommend using Blender for those who want something free and with plenty of documentation/tutorials. Lets see whose has the best skills by the end of the round .
Well I have used blender on some older pcs...back in the XP days. I just wanted to throw out a challenge for people. You do not have to try 3D but I was thinking about how to make it more interesting.
