I know that there is a topic about legalizing drugs, but I wanted to talk about Marijuana specifically.

Marijuana was banned in 1937 in the US and is now said to be a gate-way to more dangerous illegal drugs. However in this current state of economy I think we'd be better off with the legalization of marijuana. First, it would provide jobs for people. Second, more tax money to the government. Third, it would decrease sale to minors.

dude you are a crack dealer and an idiot.

Ah, the miracle of being willing to accept other peoples viewpoints and yet back up your own with evidence.

The governments scare tactic approach to preventing drugs isn't really helping, and honestly, you have to accept that much more dangerous substances are legal. Alcoholic beverages cause problems with the liver, obesity, alcoholism, not to mention the number of deaths related to drunk driving and other accidents, yet its legal. Why? Because most the lawmakers already drink it. They don't want to get rid of something they like, and when they tried to take that away, it failed miserably. Now, with Marijuana, if they legalize it on one hand it could open the flood gates that may never be closed since its more addicting, but on the other hand they aren't succeeding in shutting it down, and the illegality of it is pouring money it to crime organizations all around the world, money that could be used by the government, which could also strictly regulate the release of Marijuana, making it more difficult for minors to get it than it is right now. Pretty much you go to any high school and you're set for life with drugs. I guess I'm for legalization, not because I want it for myself, but because it may actually lead to slowing down the problems we have with drug abuse today

since its more addicting

Actually, studies show that marijuana is less addicting than alcohol. It's actually less addicting than cafiene. Most of the people who are 'addicted' to marijuana are only addicted because their life revolves around it. But that does not mean marijuana is as chemicly addicting as many people say.

It's the same with video games. Video games are not chemicly addicting, yet the people who's lives recolve around them tend to be addicted. The people who play video games casually tend to not even look like a video game person. The same goes for weed! Most people who smoke weed don't show it.

I don't think that Marijuana should be legalized, but if we have to legalize a drug the best is marijuana.

Well yea. Marijuana is probably the only drug that does not kill you. All other ones kill you like real fast.

Caffeine is one of the worlds most addicting drugs, but since people don't see the side effects as being that extreme they don't have campaigns against it, but it still has the possibility of being lethal, although I suppose its much less likely way and pretty improbable. Still, I guess that's one more piece of misinformation the government uses to try and scare people away from it, using the addict card and saying most people end up like that...

Think about it this way people.
1)The taxes that would be created would be taxes on income from marijuana sales not taxes across the board. Since tax evasion is one of the major charges against drug dealers.
2)Yes marijuana is a "gateway drug" but honestly most of the people I know who smoke pot have little interest in other drugs, other than alcohol.
3)In my life I have observed more people doing crazy stupid things when they're drunk than when they're stoned. From my personal experience alcohol has more potental for making people emotional and destructive. (i.e. the stoner will sit on the couch and marvel at the brillance of the person who invented it, the drunk will light the couch on fire because it's more entertaining that way and they're not thinking of the possible consequences)
4)Marijuana is not addictive in the traditional sense. One doesn't develop a physical dependence on it as with alcohol (alcohol being the legal drug). The addiction to marijuana is completely mental (there is no physical withdrawl). An alcoholic, when trying to quit drinking will suffer various physical side-effects while a pot-smoker who can't get any will have only the desire to get high to contend with.
5)Prohibition didn't stop people from drinking it just caused alcohol to become a major form of organized crime.

Funny story i know a guy who did that when he was drinking almost lit the house on fire. I also know a guy who broke into someones house and peed on the couch and then passed out because he thought he was at home in his bathroom. My grandpa knew a guy who thought he was home and lied down, he was in fact outside (in the winter). He froze to death.

The Worst that happens when people are smoking is...um... they're not curing cancer?

Is it just me or are the idiots massing on this forum now? They're getting louder, trolling more, making obvious, useless comments like this that have absolutely no relevance to the topic, and getting away with it. Its really annoying....

Agreed. The legality of marijuana in Amsterdam has nothing to do with whether or not they should make it legal in the U.S. which is what I gathered this thread to really be about.

Nope, I've noticed it too. More and more trolls, then the mods just give them a temporary ban. Prime example is Muse2223, who got a 3 day ban after posting different forms of porn on my profile.

Anyway marijuana should not be legalized in the U.S. People will abuse it more so than they do now, and it would become like cigarettes. A ton of people do it, and it's accepted. Marijuana is much more dangerous than cigarettes.

Not at all. Cigarettes are far more addictive and harmful to your health than marijuana is.

Agreed.

They shouldn't make it legal not for reasons that it may harm people, but it shows that when under pressure the government will crumble. I don't know if it has been legalized yet, but they can't give in to it. Becuase how long will it be before they're still in debt and they legalize heroin so they can tax it? Now that actually kills people from overdose and causes strong addiction.

It's not so much a gateway drug for the people, but one for the government in terms of legalization.

Part of the reason they banned Marijuana was because people would commit serious crime will they were high, rape, murder, theft, attempted murder, etc. All under the influence. The other reason why it was banned, I don't know.

Anyway, if it were legal again, they'd have to have like, Marijuana dens, where you have to stay until you are not high anymore. Or else crime would sky rocket.

if commiting crimes under the influence of substances is a criterium for banning them, start with alcohol. and i do not want to know how many crimes are commited by drunk dudes
